GEO is about getting cited by generative engines. What it covers, what does not work, and how to measure it.

What GEO is and why your next visit may come from ChatGPT

For twenty years the problem was ranking. Showing up in the first ten blue links. Today a growing share of searches ends in an answer written by a model, with two or three cited sources. If your company is not one of those sources, you do not exist in that conversation.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of making a generative engine able to understand, verify and cite your content.

How it differs from classic SEO

Classic SEO optimizes for a ranking. GEO optimizes for being cited. That shifts the priorities:

  • Clarity over keywords. A paragraph that answers the question in its first sentence can be quoted. One that hides the answer behind three paragraphs of introduction cannot.
  • Verifiable facts. Models prefer concrete, attributable claims: dates, numbers, names, sources.
  • Structure. Descriptive headings, lists, tables and FAQs with short answers.
  • Entity. The model has to know who you are: same name, same address, same phone and same profiles everywhere, backed by structured data.

What works

Content that answers. Every page should solve one concrete question and say so in the title.

Clean structured data. Organization, WebSite, Service, FAQPage and Article, with no invented fields. A fake aggregateRating does not improve positioning: it hurts it.

Access for AI crawlers. Robots that allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot, plus an llms.txt that describes the site for a model.

Brand consistency. The same legal name, city and links on the site, in Google Business Profile and in directories.

What does not work

Buying mentions, publishing a hundred unreviewed generated articles, or stuffing the site with keywords. Generative engines are trained to discard text that adds nothing.

How to measure it

There is no GEO ranking yet. What you can measure: how often the brand appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews answers for a fixed set of questions; how much traffic arrives with those domains as referrer; and how many of those visits convert.

It is a multi-month effort, not a one-week one. But it starts simply: write the answer your customer is looking for, on the page where they will look for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?
No. They rest on the same base: clear content, a fast site, correct structured data. GEO adds the citability layer for generative engines.
How do I know if models are citing me?
Track a fixed set of industry questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, and measure traffic with those domains as referrer in Analytics.
